DEaL Meeting with Paul Heidhues on the Google/Fitbit Merger

We are excited to invite you to a special form of our next DEaL Meeting next Thursday 29th October 2020 at 5:00 – 6:30 pm.

Paul Heidhues will give a presentation about potential theories of harm and why many competition economists are seriously concerned about the recently proposed Google/Fitbit merger. Afterwards, we want to discuss the case together.

The topic could hardly be timelier as the European Commission and other antitrust authorities currently conduct in-depth investigations of the deal. There is a huge policy debate about this merger that touches on fundamental questions for merger control nowadays: do we need stricter rules for mergers in digital markets, how should we account for privacy concerns in these cases, and how to assess the value of data? If you are interested in some background information, Paul contributed to the following Voxeu column outlining some of the most prominent concerns regarding the merger.

If you want to attend the virtual meeting, please write an email to us () in order to sign up. We will send you the Zoom dial-in information next week. The presentation will be held in English.
